How to store magic truffles: fridge, packaging, safety

How to store magic truffles comes down to three simple rules: keep them in the fridge, keep them in their original packaging, and keep them out of reach of children. Magic truffles are a fresh product, not a dried or shelf-stable one, and they are best kept cool, sealed, dry and away from light until the day you take them. This guide explains the reasoning behind each rule, what to avoid (including the freezer), how to recognise a truffle that has gone bad, and how to plan your storage around a microdosing protocol.

The BIEN storage instructions in brief

For BIEN truffles, the storage instructions are as follows:

  1. Refrigerate. Store the box in the fridge as soon as you receive it.
  2. Keep the original packaging. Leave each truffle in its own sealed portion until you take it.
  3. Keep out of reach of children. And out of reach of pets, and of anyone who might mistake it for something else.

That is all. You do not need special equipment, a vacuum sealer or a dedicated container. What matters is consistency: the same cool, closed place from the day of delivery until the day of use.

Why the fridge?

A truffle (sclerotium) is a compact mass of fungal tissue. It is sold fresh, which means it is a natural product that changes over time, like many fresh foods. Warmth and humidity encourage the growth of moulds and bacteria and speed up the natural breakdown of fresh organic material. A cool, stable environment slows these processes down.

We deliberately do not give you a precise temperature or a universal shelf life here. Conditions vary between fridges, between deliveries and between products, and we would rather not invent a figure. If the packaging shows any storage indication or date, follow it.

A few practical points help:

  • store the box on a shelf rather than in the door, where the temperature changes each time you open the fridge;
  • keep it away from strong-smelling foods and from anything that could leak onto it;
  • avoid taking the box in and out of the fridge repeatedly: take out only the portion you need on the day you need it.

Why keep the original packaging?

It is tempting to move truffles into a jar or a small box. We recommend against it, for several reasons.

  • Protection. Each portion is sealed. That limits contact with air, moisture and light, which all contribute to deterioration.
  • Dosing. BIEN truffles are pre-dosed at 1 g. As long as they stay in their portions, you know exactly what one dose is. Once they are loose in a container, that certainty disappears.
  • Identification. The original packaging keeps the portions identifiable and separate. An unlabelled container in the fridge looks like food.
  • Information. If the packaging shows product information or precautions, you keep them at hand.

Out of reach of children, and of pets

Truffles look like small pieces of food, and a fridge is a place children open freely. That is why this rule matters, and why we repeat it here. Store the box on a high shelf, at the back, or in a closed container in the fridge if you live with children. Do the same if you have pets, particularly dogs, which will happily eat anything that smells of food.

If a child or another person swallows a truffle by accident, stay calm, stay with them, and seek medical help: call the emergency number 112 if they seem unwell, or contact a doctor straight away. For an animal, contact a vet. Take the packaging with you so that professionals know exactly what was ingested. Independent information services such as Drugsinfo.nl by the Trimbos Institute describe the effects of truffles, which helps you understand what to expect while you get help.

What to avoid

Avoid Why
Leaving the box at room temperature Warmth speeds up deterioration of a fresh product
Direct sunlight or a warm place (car, window sill) Heat and light can damage the truffle
Opening portions in advance Air and moisture get in; the dose is no longer protected
Moving truffles into an unlabelled container Risk of confusion with food, loss of dosing information
Freezing Generally not recommended for texture and quality
Drying or processing at home Not how the product is meant to be used; also changes its legal nature
Using a truffle that looks or smells wrong Risk of consuming a spoiled product

What about the freezer?

Freezing is generally not recommended. Fresh fungal tissue contains water, and freezing and thawing can change the texture and quality of the truffle, with extra moisture when it thaws. We do not claim to know precisely how freezing affects each component of a truffle, and that is exactly why we advise the simpler option: keep the box in the fridge and respect any date shown on the packaging.

And drying at home?

BIEN sells whole, fresh truffles. We do not recommend drying, grinding or otherwise processing them, and we do not give instructions for doing so. Processed products containing psilocybin can also be treated differently by the law than fresh truffles. If you are unsure about the rules, our article on whether magic truffles are legal explains the basics.

How to tell if a truffle has gone bad

Before each dose, take a moment to look at the portion. Do not consume a truffle if you notice:

  • mould: fuzzy spots, green, blue, black or unusual white patches that were not there before;
  • an unpleasant smell: sour, rotten or clearly different from usual;
  • a slimy or wet surface, or a texture that has become very soft or mushy;
  • a damaged or opened portion: a torn or open seal, or liquid inside the portion.

When in doubt, do not take it. A spoiled truffle is not worth the risk of an upset stomach or worse. Dispose of it in a way that children and animals cannot reach, and contact us at info@bien.health if a whole box looks affected on arrival.

Storage and your microdosing protocol

Good storage is easier when your box matches your rhythm. Under the BIEN 2-6-2 protocol, you take 2 microdoses a week (for example on Monday and Thursday) for 6 weeks, followed by a 2-week break. One box holds 6 doses, which is three weeks: two boxes cover a full cycle.

In practice:

  • keep the box in the fridge and take out only the portion you are going to use that day;
  • for your very first time, BIEN advises half a dose (0.5 g) on a calm day, in the morning;
  • take it as it is, or with a little water or tea, as described in our guide on how to take a magic truffle;
  • if you plan a break or a trip, think ahead about what remains in your fridge and about any date shown on the packaging.

Do not take truffles out of the country with you. Outside the Netherlands, other laws apply.

Precautions

Good storage keeps the product in good condition; it does not make it suitable for everyone. Microdosing is for adults only (18+). It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you or a close family member have a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, if you have a heart condition, or if you take medication, especially antidepressants. Do not drive after taking a dose, and talk to a doctor if you have any health question. The European Union Drugs Agency and the Trimbos Institute publish independent information on psilocybin and its risks. You can find the full product information for PEACE in the Chaos in our shop.

FAQ

How long do magic truffles last?

That depends on the product, the packaging and how they are stored, so there is no single answer. Keep them refrigerated in the original packaging and follow any indication or date shown on the packaging, if there is one.

Can you freeze magic truffles?

Freezing is generally not recommended, because freezing and thawing can change the texture and quality of a fresh truffle. The simplest option is to keep them in the fridge and respect any date shown on the packaging.

Do magic truffles need to be refrigerated?

Yes. BIEN truffles are a fresh product and should be kept in the fridge, in their original packaging, from delivery until use.

What should I do if my truffles are mouldy?

Do not consume them. Dispose of them out of reach of children and animals, and contact the seller if the problem was present on delivery.

Can I keep truffles in a jar instead of the packaging?

We advise against it. The sealed original portions protect the truffle from air and moisture, keep the dose clear, and stay separate and identifiable.
